Correction Tuesday
One incorrect piece of information regarding the AIA Tennessee Convention: July 20 is the deadline for consideration of the Art 4 Architects project. Inadvertently, we showed the deadline as July 1. You may email submissions to Art4AIA@gmail.com.

A Very Real Deadline
Our hotel room group discount ($129 room rate) expires on July 13. Be certain to contact Murfreesboro Embassy Suites, 615-890-4464, request the AIA discount, and reserve your room prior to midnight, July 13.
What will architects attending Mike Fitts' retirement party have in common with Jenna Bush and Joyce Friedman (Don Friedman's wife)? They all danced to the sounds of Super T, thanks to a generous Platinum Sponsorship by Crow Friedman Group, LLC. You must register in advance to attend this party on Wednesday, August 4. Cost is $35.

Election of AIA Tennessee Vice President
Scott Busby, AIA, is a principal with Smee + Busby Architects, an eight person firm located on Market Square, Knoxville, TN. Scott has over 20 years of experience on a variety of project types, including collegiate, health care, religious, educational and commercial buildings. Scott is the recipient of numerous local and state awards and received the 2000 AIA Young Architects Award, given to only five recipients nationwide. Scott received his Bachelors of Architecture with Honors from the University of Tennessee in 1987. Scott started participating with AIAS while in school and has been active with the AIA since 1988. When not at the office, he and his wife Amanda spend their time wrangling four children and embracing the chaos.

Tennessee Lags in Stimulus Spending
According to the June 25 Nashville Business Journal, Tennessee lags in stimulus spending. Of the $4.5 billion awarded to Tennessee, only $1.3 billion has been spent. 7.7 percent of the money meant to reach the private sector has actually been given to contractors. The silver lining-plenty of money left to be spent. Fields such as energy, information technology and infrastructure are expected to be hot, all over the south. F&A spokesperson says this is a deliberate strategy in order to have stimulus dollars available through the entire recovery period.

Frank Orr, AIA Emeritus, Donates Work to Auburn
Frank Orr, AIA Emeritus, donated a selection of drawings, renderings and photographs of his work to Auburn University, his alma mater. This collection will be housed in the Main University Library, alongside similar collections from other architects. The university hopes more architects will be encouraged to make similar donations, making the university a resource for architecture students, a repository of architectural history and a center of research for regional architecture. Orr's collection includes 114 project examples from over fifty years of practice and student work, plus work from other employment in commercial art. Also included are published writings about Orr and his firms by others, and a variety of general items related to architectural practice. During his practice as a principal, his work numbered almost 800 paying and pro bono projects.

Gresham Smith and Partners designed Nissan Americas Building received the 2010 Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award.
Honored in the Energy Leadership category, the building was recognized based on outstanding leadership in improving energy efficiency, developing advanced energy technologies and using renewable energy resources. Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke recognized award winners at a ceremony in Nashville on June 24. The Governor's Environmental Stewardship Awards program recognizes exceptional voluntary actions that improve or protect our environment and natural resources with projects or initiatives not required by law or regulation. This marks the 24th year for the awards program. Thirty-nine professionals from various public and private organizations judged more than 100 nominations to determine the award recipients.
